Q&A Friday!

We say goodbye to the month of July and our "Summertime and the Living Is Easy" theme today by sharing a favorite summer memory.

One of my favorite summer memories relates to fireflies or lightning bugs. I recall my dad poking holes in the lid of a mason jar, and my sisters and I racing around the backyard in the twilight capturing the small bugs to make a lantern.

What's one of your favorite summer memories?

We caught a lot of lightning bugs too. And we got into butterfly collecting. Now that there are fewer and fewer butterfly species around, I sometimes wonder if it isn't my fault.

But what I loved most was walking out to the reservoir with a couple of friends and swimming. It was always the same routine, but we never tired of it.

I remember the fireflies, too, and the tree frogs we'd catch, bright green and tiny.

We'd go wade in the creek where it tumbled over the road, just to cool off. Or we would drive into town and swim in the public pool, then stop at the grocery store, FREEZING in the AC and our wet suits, and get the ingredients for dinner, and something special, too, like Oreos.

Some days we'd go to the five and dime and my grandmother would buy me a handful of Harlequin romance novels.

One day a week, the school library was open and Mom would take me. It was so weird to go into the school, which was quiet and a little stale, but then I'd browse the books and bring home an armload, which I returned the following week. I always loved the school librarian for doing that, giving up a morning a week of her summer vacation so I could read.

Delle,
Swimming at a resevoir sounds like heaven. I can see why you didn't tire of it!

MJ,
Your reminicing made me recall summer trips to the library, too. We'd go to the public library. My summer schedule as a kid was chores, pool, then reading! I'd always be the first one done with my books, too, and bug my mom to go back for more.

I wish I had a firefly memory--I'd love to see fireflies someday.

One of my favorite summer memories is the night of the first lunar landing. Dad came home from work early and barbecued a special dinner, and after watching the event on TV, we all went back outside to gaze at the moon, knowing there were people there. Amazing.

Terry,
I'm wishing I remembered the lunar landing! How cool that you remember it. My mother probably said something to me about watching history being made, and I was probably more interested in playing Barbies!

I saw my very first firefly this year when I was in Virginia.

These are all great memories. I remember doing a lot of cloud watching back in the day, making animals and pictures out of the clouds. Lots of fun.

Hi, Theresa :-)! I've enjoyed reading about your trips--thank you for sharing. How are you feeling? All better, I hope!

Hi Terry, thanks for asking. I'm having a little relapse this morning. I have my nephew's wedding in San Diego in a week and at this rate I can hardly walk around for more than 30 minutes before I need to lay down again. I'm sure it'll just take more time...
