Q&A

Happy frigid Friday! As those of you experiencing the joy of the artic chill all the way into the deep south can attest, it's definitely winter. The thermometer at my house registered 16 this morning--a true rarity in Georgia.

This week we explored recipes that are good to us and ways to keep our energy up. We discussed setting goals and rewards earlier in the month. And today, we'd like to discuss what rewards people give themselves for achieving their goals.

How do you reward yourself for achieving your writing goals? How do you reward yourself for achieving goals outside of writing?

As always, questions about writing are welcome. Ask away! And stay warm.

Today if I reach my page goal (I'm behind for the week) I'm going to spend the rest of the day reading, and maybe watching a movie.

When the book is sent off, dinner out!

Mary,
What fabulous rewards! Dinner out is a treat. Any specifics on what kind of restaurant? I think it should somehow relate to the book you're writing.

When I finish a book, I like to treat myself to a movie at the theater, complete with nachos and a Coke. Thus, I'm hoping to finish the first draft of the book I'm working on in the next few days because I want to go see Underworld: Rise of the Lycans when it opens next Friday. :)

I need to start rewarding myself! Okay, if I write a certain number of pages today I get to see a movie. My daughter really like slumdog millionaire so maybe I'll see that!?

Have a great weekend everyone!

I like three or four uninterrupted hours at Books a Million or B&N, both which require a trip to a larger town. Paying four dollars for a coffee drink while I browse is extravagant for me, but once in a while it's fun.

My most consistently effective reward is working for 15 minutes and then reading for 15 minutes.

I've been better at walking almost every day, eating healthier, and recognizing what I need to sleep (a very cool room, not always easy), so I bought a new place setting. It came as a set of four place settings so I'll use the extras as gifts. It's fun taking a plate of cookies or bread and jam and telling the receiver to keep the plate or pass it along. Sometimes the plate becomes as much of the gift as the treat.

I have my favorite restaurants as rewards, but I like the idea of matching the theme of the book. So when I finish one of my jungle books...Rainforest Cafe!

Hmm, I love these ideas! I need to reward myself with trips to the movies as I reach my page goals. I NEVER go to the movies these days. Oooh, Trish, I didn't know about the new Underworld! I need to see that!

I reward myself for contest finals with an English bone china tea cup. I need to reward myself for the small goals too!

Louisa's comment reminded me of another reward. When I finish a story, I buy a charm for my charm bracelet. I have 4 waiting to be put on....that's the dh's job.

BTW, did not make my page goal for the day yet. Need three more pages....

Rewards for small goals: every 45 minutes to an hour on the computer, I get up and do Wii Fit for 15 min or I grab a cup of tea. For bigger goals, like finishing the revision/or MS, I like to treat myself to time with friends since I have been in my ferret hole for so long. Last week I pre-treated myself to a fun afternoon out with four gals. I enjoyed it a lot.

I am almost done my revision -- which I must thank WNP for as it was the write 100 words a day through the holidays suggestion that kept me edging forward from Thanksgiving till now. I didn't manage to write everyday, but I managed to write a lot.

When I am finished the MS, champagne! And the weekend OFF.

On Monday, the 26th, I am starting a new class online with April Kihlstrom, Book in a Week! When it is finished, I am spending a week playing with my friend who is visiting from the DC area.

I love these ideas!

I do different things. I will go to books-a-million. The movie's. Out to dinner, or spend the weekend with friends. Anything to say YAY, I did it!
