Springing into style

by Terry McLaughlin

We had our first blast of post-winter warmth here last weekend. Ice jams shattering, snow melting, buds bursting, birds chirping, lambs frolicking, sap flowing, poppies popping, dandelions dandying–all those active verbs in motion.

You'll notice there's no closet cleaning on my list. That's something for which I have the utmost admiration and respect for other people doing at this time of year.

However, there remains one closet conundrum: the wardrobe situation. I'm always tempted to keep my comfy, oversized corduroys and sweatshirts hanging around in the closet for as long as possible, but as March marches on I begin to suspect they've overstayed their welcome. Now that it's April, I'm sure it's time to pack them in. Sniff, sniff. On the other hand, I don't have to rummage through my sock drawer looking for matching items. It's sandals time!

How do you mark this change of seasons? Lighter colors? A pedicure? A new dress? Another stab at that new year's diet?

I just bought my cocktail dress for the awards ceremony at the RWA Conference (no I didn't final, but so many people I know did--it's exciting!). I put all my winter stuff in another closet, but today it dipped to 30 degrees (brrr). I refuse to go back into full on winter clothes. I am in layer mode now.

On Saturday it was 70 plus degrees so I went to an outdoor mall, shopped for my GH awards ceremony dress and heard a band singing from the National Guard. On Sunday I planted my herb garden.

Presently I am in spring fever mode--waiting on an MS from my CP so hands are a bit tied behind my back (sure I could start a new project but....).

Happy Spring!!

Defrosted the fridge. It's finally warm enough so I'm grateful to tackle the ice. :-)

This evening, I'll be visiting the Arizona Botanical Gardens with my sister and my dad. The Chihuly glass exhibit is still on display, and my sister wants to see it at night. The weather is perfect, except for the pollen, but that's what Claritin is for, isn't it? :-)

When it gets warm enough, sometime in May, I start going barefoot in the house. And then it's time to paint the toenails. :)

Christine, we're having a blast of winter again too. It's just wrong to have temps in the 30s and 40s in April, after I've already mowed the lawn once. It was 75 here on Sunday and 41 yesterday.

I hear you Trish - from upper 80s to the 40's overnight.

I don't have that seasonal wardrobe thing going. 1) Not enough clothes, and 2) no spare closets anyway.

Although in looking forward to having to move, we've been culling. I figure if I haven't worn it in 10 years, I can probably do without. Of course, that's the trouble with a winter wardrobe in Florida. You hardly wear the warm clothes, so they don't really wear out.

Christine's outdoor-shopping, band-playing, herb gardening list makes me feel spring-y, too :-). And a visit to a local botanical garden (before hay fever season hits) would be fun--thanks for the idea, Judy.

Trish, if the weather here would continue zinging back and forth, I could justify keeping my oversized comfort clothes around for a few weeks longer. But alas, I think our semi-freeze has semi-unfrozen.

Terry, there's nothing like a move to clear the clutter, hm? My mother (bless her neat-freak soul) would occasionally switch us from one bedroom to another, making us do the in-transit deep-clean without changing houses.

Ugh! Did someone say defrost the fridge? I really need to do that. And I am so mad that I finally put up the winter stuff and bang! it was 32 last night and will be again tonight.

I want to redo the surfaces of my outside dog runs, but every time I get ready to do it it rains!! I'd rather not wait until July!

I'm really considering the diet thing as I want to look nice in my RWA awards ceremony. Notice I said "considering"!

My azaleas and wisteria is in full bloom and my roses have started to bud. I need to get out there and weed those beds and put out new mulch. SIGH

I love spring, now if I could just find a way not to spend most of it under the florescent lights in Wal-Mart.

We're getting another blast of cold tonight here in north Florida--very unseasonable. My big plans to finally paint my toenails has been put on hold again. One of these days I'll feel like sandals. I see people here wearing sandals on days that I wouldn't even consider it. The people in shorts on a day like today are definitely tourists.

Usually come spring, I'm trying to get myself back into shape, after a long cold winter during which I just want to curl up in a ball on the couch, wrapped in a warm blanket with a good book. :-)

At home in the St Louis area we're still dealing with cold weather-- 33 degrees and snowing for baseball's opening day yesterday!!-- so I'm still wearing comfy sweaters and lots of sweats.

However, I was in Phoenix a couple of weekends ago for a child's college orientation, and it was nice enjoying the warmth and sunshine. I'm sooooo ready for hot weather and baseball games!

My inspiration for the diet is the fact that a pair of my summer capris were way too tight when I was trying on clothes for our trip to Phoenix. I've told myself I will enjoy the Easter candy (Cadburry caramel eggs) on Sunday, then get serious about eating healthy and exercising on Monday.

Let's see if my willpower will show up. :-)

LOL on your "considering," Louisa :-).

Merrillee, around here it's common to see people wearing sandal-type shoes year-round, even in the rain. Very strange :-).

Ahh, Cadbury cream eggs--another sign of spring. I've been enjoying a few of those, too, Pris :-)!

Well, I'm on the oops-it's-almost-summer diet. After a week and a half of no junk food and candy, I'm feeling pretty good!

And because I'm obsessed by food, I cleaned out my pantry, removing all those cans and stuff that hid in the back for years....

LOL - good job, Terry, with the active verbs in motion! YOu even had March marching...:) I'm still working on the diet thing. I really want to be at a certain weight by the time I hit 50 in a few months. I just dyed my hair brunette!! And now I want to lose 10 pounds and then I'll be a whole new person at 50!! Woohoo! That's how I'm springing into style!

I really should defrost the fridge too...but that's not on my list so I think I'll forgetaboutit for now.
