The Perfect Sack Lunch

Back-to-school evokes fond memories of opening the brown paper sack lunch my mom would make for me when I was in elementary school. Packaged cupcakes for dessert would make me smile. Certain fruits like mushy apples or a banana whose smell would permeate everything else in the brown paper sack would make me sigh. When I was in high school, I packed my own lunch. Since I was always on a diet, my lunch usually consisted of diet soda (saccharine sweetened) and a turkey sandwich. If I felt I could afford the calories, I’d throw in an apple or celery sticks.
My idea of a perfect sack lunch today is not that far gone from what I loved as a child. I’ve made a few healthy concessions, though. Here’s what I’d include: turkey and swiss on whole wheat, baked Ruffles or mini-carrots, Honey Crisp apple, 1% milk, and one homemade chocolate chip cookie.
