At the moment, I happen to be pushing through my first romantic thriller! Exciting but difficult in the sense that I’m definitely writing out of my comfort zone. How many different genres have you tried writing in? Are you more comfortable writing a contemporary vs. historical? Do you feel as if you can write a better paranormal and yet you get the most editor/agent bites with your romantic suspense or romantic comedy? What are you working on right now?
As a reader do you try to push yourself to try new things when you’re at the bookstore? What’s your favorite genre and why?
A lot of questions, I know, but curious minds want to know!
Can you imagine a life without books? I can’t. Nothing makes time fly like a good book. When I’m waiting for an appointment, I never have to worry about watching the clock if I have a book on hand. Books relax me. They teach me new things and take me to faraway places. They make me laugh and cry and cringe and sigh.
It’s all subjective. Right now I am reading New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. My sixteen year-old daughter and all of her friends are crazy about Edward Cullen. I wanted to see what all the hype was about so I finished Twilight and moved on to the second book. I am almost finished with New Moon and I have to say it has been frustrating…waiting for Edward to pop back into the story…and it took way too long for him to arrive, IMO! I still have another 50 pages to go, but so far I’m giving this book a 6 out of 10. Despite the low score, I must admit, Stephanie Meyers did a good job of keeping me reading, turning the pages, eager to find out what the heck was going to happen. And isn’t that what it’s all about?
To be perfectly honest, I was never interested in reading books with vampires until I judged a contest and one of the entries happened to have a vampire protagonist. I loved the story! That experience taught me to never say never when it comes to what type of books I’ll read. Anything goes!
This year I plan to read a lot of Noodler books. I think I’ll try a little bit of everything…Trish Milburn’s A Firefighter in the Family would be a good place to start. I’ve read most of Terry McLaughlin’s stories. I love her humor. I must read Diane Gaston’s Mysterious Miss M, especially since that book happens to be on the Romantic Times list of 1001 books we must read before we die! My daughter and I love Stephanie Rowe’s young adult books. I think I will broaden my horizons with Jill Monroe’s hot and spicy Primal Instincts. The Bride Price by Anne Mallory looks good…Sebastien Deville has waited his whole life for revenge…what’s not to like? And after a hectic day, I think I’ll sit down and read Merrillee Wren’s Mommy’s Hometown Hero. And if I read a little faster maybe I’ll finally get to read M. J. Fredrick’s Hot Shot, Lee McKenzie’s With This Ring, Maureen Hardegree’s More Sweet Tea, Esri Rose’s Bound to Love Her, Janet Mullany’s Dedication, Dianna Love’s Dead After Dark Anthology and Colleen Gleason’s When Twilight Burns! And this list doesn’t include books by Sandy Blair, Tori Scott, Anna DeStefano, Jennie Lucas, and others. To be Continued…
When Trish suggested this topic for Conference week, I thought it was a great idea. Then I looked at The List and realized I've only read one.
One.
I loved it, thought Phoebe was a terrific heroine, a balance of toughness and softness that is hard to find in many romantic suspense. The hero (Dylan? Not sure) was playful and determined in his pursuit of her. And there was a scene in the RS plot that left me gaping. I could NOT believe that line was crossed, but WOW did it up the suspense.

This is a huge month for those of us among the Harry Potter fandom. In a mere 10 days, the fifth movie in the franchise, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, hits theaters. I've just re-watched the first four movies to prepare for the Phoenix opening. Gradually, the movies have gotten darker and more intense as the threat of Lord Voldemort's return increases and as Harry, Ron and Hermione grow into their teenage years, with all the inherent angst that brings. Not only is there an exterior life-or-death threat to the entire wizarding world, but they're concerned with getting dates to dances and dealing with unrequited love. In Phoenix, Harry finally has his first kiss, with Cho Chang.
You can tell the darkness is increasing just by looking at a couple of the new movie posters.

Then at the stroke of midnight on July 21, the last book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, goes on sale. This will be the first Harry book I've bought, having borrowed the rest from the library. But I don't want to risk waiting on the hold list at the library and somehow hearing the answer to the big question we're all waiting to have answered -- who will die? Author J.K. Rowling has said that two characters will die, and I'm nervous for Harry, Ron and Hermione. I've heard speculation that Hagrid and Snape might be on the chopping block, but you never know what might happen. There's also speculation that Harry has to die in order for Voldemort to be defeated, that Harry is a tragic hero. I just hope Ron and Hermione get together and don't die, and Harry and Ginny get back together and don't die. I just can't imagine the legions of fans wanting to see the seventh movie if any of the main trio are killed. Still, I've heard that a big bookstore chain in Britain has set up help lines for readers traumatized by the deaths in the book. That doesn't sound good.
So, are you a Harry fan? Will you be attending the parties at bookstores the night Deathly Hallows comes out? I think I might. It's a huge cultural event that's not likely to be repeated in my lifetime.
